As the most prestigious luxury hotel in New York, the Waldorf Astoria was built in the late 19th century. In 2017, the third Waldorf Astoria Hotel in China opened in Chengdu, continuing the luxury of such hotel in New York while mirroring the unique spirit of Chengdu.

About Me

德国人施明德是成都华尔道夫酒店的总经理，也是欧盟商会中华西南片区董事会的成员。在德国长大的他有着丰富的人生经历，做过学徒、当过管家、成为过工程师、也做过帮厨，旅居六国的他边工作边学习，他认为教育让人受益终身，也深信不管在什么工作岗位都需要换位思考，以及包容和理解。

Michael Schmitt, German, is the general manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel here in Chengdu, and a board member of the European Chamber here in China, Southwest chapter. Growing up in Germany, he once was an apprentice, a housekeeper, an engineer, and a kitchen assistant. He has lived in six countries and kept learning while working. He believes that education is a lifelong benefit, and he also believes that empathy, tolerance and understanding are necessary in any job.

关于2020

About 2020

施明德说，回望2019年，旅游和酒店业都是发展极好的一年，当时大家坚信不疑2020会更创佳绩。直到一月底，新冠疫情来临，世界开始再也不一样了。

Mr. Schmitt said that looking back at 2019, it was a great year for the tourism and hospitality industry, and there was a strong belief that 2020 would do even better. By the end of January, when the COVID-19 hit, the world was never the same again.

整个第一季度，酒店行业都处于最低迷的状态，可让人没想到的是，四、五月入住率飞速上升，到了九、十月，成都的酒店入住甚至高达80%—95%。过去几个月，入住率和利润的平均值都比2019年还要高，施明德认为这是一个非常良好的趋势，也是一个在成都才能实现的趋势。

Throughout the first quarter, the hotel industry was in the worst state. Surprisingly, the occupancy rate rose rapidly in April and May. In September and October, the hotel occupancy rate in Chengdu was as high as 80% to 95%. In the past few months, the averages of such occupancy and profit have been higher than those in 2019, which Schmitt thinks is a very good trend, and one that can only be realized in Chengdu.

施明德说，2017年华尔道夫酒店在中国选择城市的时候，就预见了成都将成为一座重要的城市。现在的成都对于企业来说，有着非常好的投资环境，许多企业都源源不断地进入这里，同时这座城市的发展也是连续不断的。

Mr. Schmitt said that when the Waldorf Astoria Hotel was selecting the landing cities in China in 2017, it foresaw that Chengdu would become a major city. Today, Chengdu has very good investment environment for enterprises, as many of them are constantly entering here. At the same time, the development of the city is continuous.

施明德回忆，自己刚来成都的时候，酒店门口的成都交子公园还没有建成，现在已经完全开放了。而跨过河，另外一座超过22万平方米的城市公园也正在建设中。这是一座长在公园里的城市，人们推开门就能走进公园，开完会，穿上自己的跑鞋，就能在绿道上奔跑，还有供小孩玩耍的沙堆。

Mr. Schmitt recalled that when he first came to Chengdu, the Chengdu Jiaozi Park in front of the hotel had not yet been built. Now it is fully open. Across the river, another city park of more than 220,000 square meters is also under construction. This is a city in parks, where people open doors and walk in, as well as people putting on their sneakers and running along the greenways after meetings, and there are sandpiles which the kids can play with.

施明德还提到，成都的第二机场天府机场也快投入使用了，中国仅有三个城市拥有两个机场，全世界也只有26个。所以这里的就业环境真的非常好，GDP增长率也是最高最快的城市之一，也是在疫情的打击下恢复的最快的城市。这是一座宝藏城市，总有惊喜等着大家去探寻。

Mr. Schmitt also noted that Chengdu's second airport, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, is almost ready to open. Only three Chinese cities have two airports, and only 26 cities do in the world. So the employment environment here is really good, as the GDP growth rate is the highest and fastest among the cities, and it is also the fastest city recovering from the outbreak of COVID-19. This is a city full of treasures, where there are always surprises waiting for you to explore.
